The Bluebird of Happiness and a Question

I liked the suggestion by Owen that the bird in my last post could be the Bluebird of Happiness. What a lovely idea! I liked the idea so much I've made another painting with that as the theme. One question, what do you call a picture that doesn't use any paint, just coloured pencils? Is that then a drawing? When I think of a drawing I don't imagine there to be areas of colour. What would you call it? This picture has watercolour as well as coloured pencil so I think it can safely called a painting.
Or can it?
If it was rendered in pencil crayons alone, what then would it be?

I think coloured or no, pencils = drawing! Painting to me means that the medium was applied by brush. Trouble is what about oil paintings where a pallette knife is used?? Plasterings??? Its a dilema!!!!!

Thanks April, It has a very different look to the original, I find it hard to do the same expression twice. I think this one is prettier though.

Paintings are made with paint, drawings are made with tools that leave a line using any other medium. At least that's how I see it. Works made using ink and a brush are still drawings for me, while oil paint will always turn into a painting, no matter what tool you use to apply it.

I don't know what to suggest (only maybe a coloured drawing but i don't know if that could have a minor connotation), so a drawing is perfect for some work using colour pencils. But I would like to say that your painting-drawing is marvellous! What a lovely scene. The bird and the girl are very fairy (not sure of the adjective) (féériques in French).

I think it really depends on how you feel about it Jessie. There are so many different media today, and ways of applying them, that the lines are very blurry (no pun intended...really!). Did you use a brush loaded with water to get the watercolour effect? Then I'd say calling it a painting even without the watercolour paints is ok. But then I always find it odd to refer to a pastel piece as a painting, to me it's definitely a drawing! Maybe it's the idea of a medium that is wet vrs dry? Wet=paint, dry=drawing...but then I'd also agree with invisiblechild that a pen and ink is a drawing...aarrggh! But anyway...she's lovely, I especially love the way you've captured her eyes!

Thanks Christina :) I feel odd about referring to dry media as a painting but if we call a coloured pencil picture a drawing perhaps that diminishes it? Oh dear now it sounds as though I think drawing has less value then a painting. (I don't!)

Hi Jessie, I guess I think of drawings as any kind of pencil or pen work. But I suppose if used watercolour pencils and then went over it with a paintbrush...hmmm....I think I might say its a painting??
Anyhow, its a really lovely painting! I really love the blue highlights on her hair and eyes

You know what I think? As important it is to categorize art according to their medium, sometimes it gets too much for me to be labeled according to genre, medium, etc., etc. So why don't you call it whatever your heart desires and let the critics worry about it?? Hahaha...(^O^)/

I've been thinking about why I'm drawing cottages lately.  Maybe it's because there aren't many people around where we live and on our daily walks we rarely come across anyone else which I suppose is a good thing as we're still in Lockdown and have to practice Social Distancing which has now become a very well used phrase in our language! Maybe it's this lack of seeing people around that my mind is turning towards houses and flowers? The ones above are done in ink. I love the pearlescent inks, they're so beautiful when they catch the light. The paintings above and below are painted in acrylic.
