Acrylic Paint, Love it or Hate it?

There was a time, not so long ago when my medium of choice was acrylic on canvas. I did many big colourful paintings, had many exhibitions with them and thought for a while I'd never want to use anything else.
We found an old director's chair that somebody had put out with the rubbish and as the seat and the backrest were made out of canvas I thought it would be the perfect base to play with some acrylics again and give it a new lease of life. I painted a design on it this morning but in a sudden fit of pique (or madness?!) took a brushload of lime green paint and covered up all the meticulous painting I'd done earlier. After having watercoloured my way through the last year I'm finding the acrylic too sticky and frustratingly slow coming off the brush. Who'd have thought I used to love its butteryness...fickle...moi?
The picture above is a background of a knifeful of acrylic paint that was left over on my pallet, and drawn over with a brown ink line. As for the chair, the paint is drying right now so I'll photograph it tomorrow and show it here.

I've been there! The whole fit of pique/madness thing. I guess it's the dawning of a new artistic era for you. That's pretty exciting.

Well, sheesh, the one good thing about not be able to visit as often lately, is there is so much love content to catch up on in your blog! Fun!

At the moment I'm loving acrylic on canvas but I seem to go between the two (watercolor and acrylic) quite alot. I feel like my style changes alot depending on the paint I'm using. I'm not sure if that's the case or if I'm just still trying to find my style. I LOVE your water colours but I think it's good to chop and change every now and then. Looking forward to seeing the chair!!

I used to paint exclusively with acrylics. Then only watercolor. Now am tempted by oil washes... I guess it's typical to always be experimenting..?

Thanks Nicola, I think my style has changed too, although I try to be true to paint how I feel is right for me, it looks different according to the medium I'm using. I'll post the chair later :)

Hi Tara,I'm tempted by oil too, maybe that'll be my next love? ;)

Hi Ruthie, I think it's best to be excited about using a medium otherwise it shows in the painting don't you think? I get excited by watercolour these days!

I switch regularly between acrylic and watercolour but I find painting with brushes onto a primed canvas surface quite restricting when using acrylic so I use mainly a pallet knife to paint with which gives you a lot more "accidental expression" especially if you load up dabs of different colour on the knife.

Still prefer watercolour though !

I love acrylic! It is been my medium of choice for awhile. I think it has been about a decade since I have painted with anything else. I like painting in layers so it works for me.
