My Sketchbooks

I love sketchbooks.
I love choosing and buying them, I love using them, and I love to look at other people's. The painting above is one I did this morning in my sketchbook without having a reason, other than just wanting to draw eyes really and the rest tagged along. Now it reminds me of a certain hollywood actress - (non intentional!)
I then wondered as a matter of interest of what was in my sketchbook exactly 10 years ago this month. I've been keeping sketchbooks for some years now so I knew there would be something and below is what I found.

I've noticed a similar way of drawing the features, but at least the 'mud' that I used for shadows has improved a bit!

Facinating post Jessie! That's amazing - the difference, yet similarities in your work 10 years ago. Yes, I agree about about the mud commnet - but all my watercolour painting ends up much mre muddy than that, that's why I don't really do it! I love sketchbooks too, they are our 'nuts and bolts', aren't they?
Jessie, thanks for your commnets on my blog, I wanted to ask if you had any tips about how to approach a publisher, as I'm having no luck whatsoever......Hmmm, it's so difficult. Oh well, I think I will have a go with those paints (I say this every time you post something!!) Bye for now! x

I love sketchbooks and notebooks too. For some reason I can never start on the first page. I always have to leave a few blank pages. Then I can never get rid of them and they are everywhere.
Interesting to see the change in your technique over the years.

Well I had a go with the paints Jessie - yak! I'm not really sure what to do with them, maybe I should go on a course....I tend to use them just as flat, blocking in of colour (I won't bother showing you the result, as it wasn't very good!) It's blinkin' fiddly too! Nah, I think I'll stick to me pencils!

I've tried most media and hated watercolour at first. Isn't it odd that it's now my favourite? We should each do what feels best and today what feels best is dotting spots of ink...

Jess, i love the colours! thats fab u still have all your sketchbooks, a wonderful way to see how your style changes, and for reference & ideas too, do you ever re-work old ideas? - i threw loads of my old sketchbooks out when i was having a "bad" patch, how i wish i still had them all. *ruthie*

I don't rework old ideas consciously and a lot of the sketchbooks were from college so don't feel like me, but the odd bits that do, visit similar themes to what I'm doing today. They track my journey through learning to handle paint and the best ones are of the children growing up.x
