Children's Books and Toys

I've always loved what people refer to as 'children's illustration. Why is it just for children, what about meeeee? When my children were little, a perfect day for me would be to visit the library and spend time pouring over the children's picture book section, taking pleasure in choosing the best illustrated ones (sometimes regardless of the story content, shame on me!) It's taken me a while to realise I'm 'allowed' to have these books just for myself, so I've treated myself recently. I've bought the Lost Happy Endings by Carol Ann Duffy and illustrated by Jane Ray.

Jane Ray has a lovely way with colour and design, and has illustrated many books, so now I want all of them!
I'm so familiar with having toys around, that I've not noticed them as possible models for drawing.
Here's a quick sketch of a little plastic crocodile see-saw and a swing.

I used to do the same when choosing my childrens books, always went with the illustrations I liked. Shame on me too ;)
I also collect illustrated childrens books. I have a few Angela Barratt ones. I hunt for them at charity shops and car boot sales.
There is a beautiful book by Jane Ray called Mermaids.

Hi Karen,
I've got the Hidden House by Angela Barrett, a bit tatty from over-use but loved by my children. I actually bought the Mermaids book for a friend's daughter last christmas,I wish I'd kept it really! ;)

Just popping over to have a peek at your blog following a link from Sandy. Love your bright and colourful illustrations. I agree with you about childrens' books. I often buy them just for the images. Jane Ray is an old favourite with her superb artwork.
