A New Colour

I mentioned in my last post that I was working on a new painting and here it is, the new finished piece. :)
It was inspired by my recent trip to Cornwall where I saw a baby grinning at me while being carried by its mother. I've called it 'The Journey' and it's now listed it in the shop if you'd like to pop over and see.

I've had this tube of violet oxide for a really long time but I've never used it because for some reason I though it was an ugly colour and I didn't see the point in it. Why did I buy it? Well it was so long ago now, I can't remember! Maybe it was because it had 'violet' in the title and you know me, I love all shades of purple. :)
But purple it ain't and because I don't like to waste paint, I'd often feel guilty that this one would stay at the bottom of the box, never used.

So what happened? Well to mu surprise I found I enjoyed working with it for the first time a few days ago during the painting of 'Looking Back.' The dark background is the violet oxide straight from the tube and for the hair, I just mixed it with white. I'm not sure if you can see from this picture above but in real life the hair is a subtle shade of mauve. I have found a new colour that I like! Who knew?!

So this is how 'The Journey' painting began, a violet oxide and magenta sky. The dark really brings the magenta to life and the magenta brings out the warmth of the dark colour don't you think? I've used it in the rest of the painting too, on the mother's dress and mixed with white for the background.
It's definitely going to get a lot more use now that I've grown to love it!

Is there a colour you can't bring yourself to use? I'd love to hear about it. :)
Thanks for visiting today! xx

your painting turned out beautiful Jessie, two beautiful happy faces (the two flowers like if they were mirrors), there's a feeling of contentment and freedom in this work.

i always hesitate to use bright pink and yellow but i use to mix them to a pink and yellow which pleases me, i hardly use paint straight from the pots.

It's a lovely picture, and your new colour is gorgeous. I especially like her hair. I've never been a big fan of lots of orange. Maybe one day I'll be converted! CJ xx

hi Jess,
your painting is completely charming! I love where you found the inspiration and that you have made friends with this beautiful color.

i have resisted, yellows oranges and reds most my life. yet at this age i seem to adore all colors and it feels so much better, not sure where the shift came. sweet evening to you.

Wow! When I first saw thus the thing that struck me was the rich sky. Violet oxide eh...I don't have any but I am feeling the need to buy some as I adore the colour. It compliments the pink beautifully. I personally don't seem to use greens. Its not because I don't like them. More that they don't fit with some of the other richer tones I use. I really love this painting Jess . It is magical.

I have a lot of problems with muted oranges. They bug me... although when it comes to painting, I'll use whatever it is that's needed, so I'm probably ok. But I don't think I'd ever do (or enjoy) a predominately orange piece of art!

Really cold, pale colours. In particlular there is a green, a yellow and a mauve which fit this category. *shudder*

It's so interesting to hear your colour dislikes. :) I'm not a fan of muted colours but I'll accept them if they're accompanied by very warm bright strong colours. Then they're allowed ;)

Grey has always been a not so favorite color of mine. But I saw a grey post recently that I really enjoyed. I think I could get used to this violet color, because, like you, I am in love with Purple.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, Jess. Do you celebrate it there?

love, ~Sheri
